Talk about government gods lying through their teeth. The amount of driving that would be required to amortize the price premium imposed by the big Li-Ion battery simply makes the MPGe number irrelevant.
Dream on about 50% employers providing outdoor charging. Pay me $20k first before I would install another meter for you, and you'd better be on the hook for anyone and everyone steeling electricity from that outlet.
"It also makes economic sense for the goverment to subsidize it by . . ." In other words you admit that the undertaking is not economically viable on its own.
As explained before, because oil production cost is lower overseas than in the US, the less oil consumption in the US and the lower the inflation adjusted price (i.e. gold-price) of oil, the higher the import percentage would be. When oil consumption and oil industry cut back, the domestic producers get shut down first. When oil consumption increase, the domestic higher cost well start producing again. The foreign low cost wells are always in production (in the absence of wars), for obvious reason. That's why and that's how politicians with oil industry background wage foreign wars to jack up oil price and reduce "foreign oil dependency." Beware what you wish for.
The tax on gasoline sales is far higher than the tax collected on electricity. That actually be one good reason for electric cars. However, for people living in areas where wind mill and solar panels are viable (low land cost), the driving distance is typically beyond that of plug-in's electric-only range. Once the battery is depleted, the plug-in is just a conventional car with a very heavy battery pack always on board, so much for all the effort over the years making cars lighter to save gas.
