I had to chuckle a bit over your first point here, because a good % of the time we go back and forth and I'm just as bad about always having the last word... so that might be partly why you're shooting 50%... ;-)

I wouldn't say Noel's comments constitute an ad hominem response so much as a comment thanking AeroEd (who's comments may be divergent, but not ad hominem)... sure it's all tangential, but in most of these, the content starts to repeat after a while so it devolves anyway... I think that was the point Noel was making. Imho, Noel is a great source of real content on this site, and I don't blame him for being put off by an unending repeating discussion... I try to get less involved in these now in part for that reason (I don't want to put people off), and in part because typing many responses wastes a bit of time...

as to the prius vs volt thing... I dunno... for me, neither do much. I liked what Saab was doing with the hybrids. I think the main advantage of going electric in some capacity should be simplicity, and if the end product isn't better, then why? Both of those models are not really cars I would like to drive. Something like the Volvo recharge concept: AWD, no transmission, no motor under the hood = more space for batteries + less weight... sounds interesting to me. whether practical or not? sure, that's a valid debating point, but I think EV's will get interesting when there is some real shakeup - some real disruptive tech... that looked like an interesting slant. the simplicity of the saab through the road hybrid vert (and recent exwd stuff with american axle) also was appealing. ultimately, if the car is not a real car, and drives like a car ought to (or better - I like flat torque curves, an electric motor could be better than a turbo!), well, until then, I'm not too interested... government subsidies or not...
