It used to be thought that the so-called "tipping point" for people really freaking out about gas prices was about $4/gallon. Well, we've been there for a while and people aren't exactly lining up to buy more fuel efficient cars. Sure, they are buying new cars that are more fuel efficient anyway, so that's making a difference, but it also moves the "tipping point" higher.
I'm thinking that $5, which I'm guessing we could hit within 2 years will get a lot of people's attention, and that $6 will really do it. But that's really a qualified maybe.
As the old fleet of cars hits the boneyards and recyclers the cars being bought will be ones that get better mileage-- which lessens the pain at the pump. The newer cars on the road will be a mix of hybrid, plug-in, and modern gas and diesel engines that get better mileage. There's a bunch of other elements involved, but unless we suddenly see European-level gas prices I don't see a huge shift to high fuel mileage cars. It will just evolve over a decade.
Just my $0.02.
