I'll take a stab at answering this, even though I'm Canadian.
There is much useful information in this site which will give you some data to work with but basically, the Saab owners tend to be among the more well-educated; wealthier; more likely than not to vote Democrat; likely in their 30s; likely to have owned more than one Saab; likely to identify with the advertising; more likely than other brand owners to have a dog; active lifestyle people. They are also more likely to live in up-market suburban communities but that can be said of a wide array of vehicle owners.
Offhand, I'd say you are more likely to find more Saabs in New England, than in any other area of North America.
The "rich housewives" remark may very well apply to the Saab 9-3 cabriolet but it is equally as likely to apply to the gay community for that model and in terms of regional variations, an observation like I just made is less likely to be of wide application in the south, where a broader array of people buy cabriolets. I'd say offhand that Saab are bought on a final decision basis more by men than by women compared to other cars like Acura and Lexus; even BMW.
You cannot tell by looking at somebody whether they are Saab people but you do see more Saabs in ski area parking lots than in other kinds of recreational parking lots like golf courses. Most people who can afford a Saab will have another vehicle. The Saab is more likely to be the first vehicle than the second.
One statistic that I recently posted came directly from GM. Saab owners are the most highy connected internet users among all car owners at 85%.
Among European cars, Saab ranks below only Porsche as a car likely to be bought again after having owned one previously. Among all cars, Saab is 5th and Porsche is 1st in this category. The in-between cars are Lexus, Honda and Toyota.
Another site where your study group might benefit by "drilling down" is CarTalk.com.
I have heard the remark that a Saab person is more likely to be an engineer than a member of any other professional group.
Please do not ask me to back any of this data up with studies. This I have gleaned from a wide array of sources.
From Britain, I have learned that among personality types, a Saab person is far more likely to stop and help a stranded motorist than is a BMW driver or a Mercedes driver. Of them it was said a Mercedes driver would likely draw a sun curtain and speed up past such a motorist while a BMW driver would be likely to throw boiling oil on such a motorist.
As well, it is said of Saab people by this British writer that if you were at a party, by far the most interesting conversationalists would be found among Saab drivers, who are more likely to be wider-read, more socially involved, and more outgoing than most.
Does this help?
