OK ...I'll try this:
Advertising is primarily informational, intended to have one consider the product or service in preference to other choices. The next step in the decision-making process is to confirm that what your senses have told you about your choices (cognition), confirms with the information at hand.
Dissonance is the lack of harmony between what you perceive(d) and the reality.
Using cognitive dissonance in advertising, advertisers seek, not only to inform, but to reinforce one's choices. One is better able to defend one's choices when another choice not taken presents itself. Having the strength of the information presented in the advertising reinforces the purchase decision and, if it's doing its job, should help evaporate cognitive dissonance.
Am I on the right track?
