I learned in business school some large portion of advertising is done to overcome "cognitive dissonance". Look this up (I recommend adding Atomica.com to your toolbar - it's free.).

I don't find I have much cognitive dissonance with a Saab. It has to be one of the easiest cars to justify owning of any because of its Swiss Army knife capabilites and fun factor. I also find great appeal in the lines of the car; its design; even though I know Saab follows the principle "form follows function".

I don't come here to Saabnet.com to overcome my own cognitive dissonance as much as I do to try to help others overcome theirs and generally to learn about this car and because I've always been a car buff and a second rate writer.

Breaking into the big(ger) sales numbers should become a lot easier now. Note, for example, all the Pontiac Aztek-type people coming on the market. We made fun of this unit on these boards because it's so ugly but think of it - the reason people (mostly young people) want them is because they offer the virtue of multi-functionality.

Consider too the phenomenal growth of ethically-based mutual funds. All these investors are making choices with their money based on environment as a factor. With Saab due to introduce two revolutionary clean-burning but power-retaining hydrocarbon energy saving gizmos in the engine, you can (sort of) truly say about Saab that it is an "Ecopowered" (Reg'd Trade Mark) automobile. Sales sales sales.

It helps that Saabs hold the endurance record at Talladega Superspeedway. If you win over the Dixie types, you win influence over a lot of auto-owners. Then, there's Pike's Peak. Somebody at GM is doing all the right things. Watch for crossover marketing between rally championships, Pike's Peak, and Talledega to capture some portion of the good-ole-boys.

The other trend to watch is retro-styling. There is a great feature on the Buick Bengal in New York Times auto section. Now that Saab has the man from Mercedes on staff, maybe we'll see some beautiful refinements in design w/o sacrificing anything in performance and functionality. Swedish design has always been at the forefront in stuff like furniture and light fixtures - even eyeglasses. There's no reason it cannot make the translation to cars. Car design wins more customers than any other single feature of an auto.
