I think there are two classes of Saab drivers here.
The first is the serious driver/engineer type, who likes the tradition of engineering-led, rather than marketing-led, cars. Having just got my 95 Aero I can see why the drivers like it!
The second is the type of person who can afford a good car, but doesn't like the extreme branding that comes with Mercs (plutocrat); BMWs (wideboys); Jags (Olde golfe clubbe/over-stuffed leather armchairs). Saabs are seen as having a sort of classlessness here, which is a particular niche, but doubtless a limiting one. Audis have a similar invisibility, but IMHO the A6 is too slack a drive.
Advice to Saab? Don't worry about the mass-market, but pursue your own areas of excellence. Turn up the Scandinavian design knob for one: over here at least the tradition of Aalto and the cleanliness of Scandinavian design carry a lot of weight among visually literate people. Allow the superiority of design and manufacture to win markets - it may seem easier to give people what they want, but it's more fun to make them want what you've got. The 95 is already too bland, and the frustration for me of choosing a new car was how dull they all were.
