Arbitration might be another solution, if you want Saab to cover the cost. It's suppose to last at the most six weeks. I would talk to Saab about what paper work needs to be filled to proceed with this. An independent will look over the car and make a decision. I have done this in the past and have had a favorable outcome. I'm also assuming that you might still get the dealer loaner during the whole process, so what is to lose?
If you do need a new engine I've seen used one for under $2k.
