Hi,
I have a heavily modded '99 Viggen myself. My pistons rings blew, like Vigge described it. I was using MapTun Stage III at that moment. The same happened to afriend of mine with Nordic Stage III in his '00 Viggen.
Somewhere on the repair route, I wanted to go for Wiseco custom forged pistons. They have a very good reputation. But the Wiseco rep himself advised me agains custom forged pistons on a steet car. They mess up the whole engine thermodynamics, and the engine would not last much more than 30.000 miles with them.
There were no Saab or Mahle oversize pistons available where I live, so I had to get a new base engine. Price of the base engine was approx. 3.000 USD plus tax, but it is a MY2004, which has forged Mahle pistons already (as Vigge wrote, Saab has constantly changed B235R pistons).
My engine is very fine tuned now, with gas flowed head, fine balanced crank shaft, fine weighed pistons. I had Maptun Stage III before, with 3" cat back and race cat. I added a huge custom intercooler with the repair, but I´m running stock software again, and I am driving very carefully now. I have an appointment with Hirsch, who is willing to write a custom Trionic 7 software for me on his dyno once my new engine is run in properly. The development of the new SW is going to take 2 full days, starting from his Troll R Program, not 5 minutes like Stromquist manages it sometimes. It will not be cheap, but it will be by the official Saab tuner, and with full warranty.
This whole experience has cost me a lot of money, but it taught me two things:
1) Modern engines are much more complex than you think. Change one factor, and you put the whole thing in jeopardy.
2) If you are willing to tune, you have to be willing to pay for it if it goes wrong.
Just my 2 cents,
Yours,
Philip
