Can't find it right now, but I had a link to a guy who worked on race cars for a living, including Indy 500 racers (he now builds carbon fiber airplanes). He describes measurable compression loss in Formula Atlantic engines after 500 miles of racing with a KN filter. They then used a different filter type and found no loss of compression.

It's your money, right? I have a lot of respect for some of the "tuners" out there, but in the end rely more on data and the information from guys who actually race the cars because, let's face it, tuners need to sell stuff like KN filters. It's a moot point, though - I'm going by the test results, the time savings and the money savings.

As for the linked tests not being valid, as noted in a post above, how more valid do you want than SAE and ISO protocols? There is nothing else in the automotive world. Google SAE and ISO if you don't know what they are. In the end though, it comes back to what you want to believe: marketing or some simple math and empirical data.

I was looking at a website with pictures of the special "experimental" Saab from the 1980's that had like 285 horsepower. While it doesn't have the stock airbox, it sure does look like it does have a paper filter - stock, no less. :-)

I'm no Saab expert but I have looked at some intake tracts, and have seen some data (mmmm, data is good) with a surprising pressure drop across the first generation Saab 900 turbo intake tract. The kicker? The pressure drop was the same with and without the filter (or very close anyway- need to dig up the site). So for that car anyway, a better intake system must surely be possible.

Saab on, dude...
