For what it's worth, Hirsch uses stock paper filters in all of their stages of tune. They mentioned some of the same things mentioned in this thread. They told me that a K&N does flow better when new or just cleaned. By the time it actually filters as good as a paper filter, the stock filter does indeed flow better. The stock paper filters have a much larger overall surface area than K&N drop in filters. Just look at all the folds in the stock filter versus the K&N. In their opinion, Hirsch says that a Saab would have to have significantly higher horsepower levels to really benefit from the better initial flow of a K&N type air filter. And then to keep that better flow, it would have to cleaned and re-oiled quite often.
