In my case, the car (2000 9^5 SE) had about 63k, and was over the warranty time by several months, too. The nice lady at SAAB said she didn't think they would be able to do anything for me, but that they would call the dealer (which is exactly what the dealer said would happen when he gave me the number to call).
About 3 hours later, I got a call back that SAAB would cover the DIC and spark plugs, but I had to pay for the labor. Seemed like a fair deal to me.
I don't know what the service manager said, but it confirmed in my mind that he really did go to bat for me on this one.
There are lots of independent service shops in this area, but my experience with this dealer (Cold Brook Saab, Skowhegan, Maine) on this and other things over the years has been a very positive experience.
IMHO, getting to know the dealer's service manager is a *very* good thing.
