I have a Stage 3 set-up, which means a re-mapped ECU, 3" exhaust, and improved air delivery. This allows for the turbo to boost up to and beyond the "red zone" on the stock turbo gauge. A stock set-up cannot reach these levels on its own. Merely pulling Fuse 9 will not give stock set-ups as high a boost-level as my car can obtain.
Yes, it is true that Pin 14 tells the ECU that the car is equipped with an auto or stick. The ECU software is the same no matter what type tranny is in the car. The difference comes from Pin 14 sending the signal to the ECU that the car is an auto, and so, should follow the specifications for limiting torque and boost. If no signal is sent to the ECU, then the specifications are followed as is for a stick. Obviously, this "trick" will not work in a car equipped with a stick. There would be no change.
Overboost is handled and protected by the ECU, so there is no chance of that causing damage to the engine. Fuel is cut off if this situation occurs to keep the engine from spontaneously combusting.
As for how "bad" it is for the tranny, that is a complete unknown. It is still not a stated fact as to why Saab decided to limit the amount of torque and boost in an auto (as is definitely found in the auto Aero's). I have gone so far as to speak with various Saab service mgr's as well as the Saab Performance Division here in CT, trying to find out the truth, and no one had the answer. Some have said that they just didn't spend the time/money on research into this, other's have said that the ZF can't handle it. Unfortunately, these are all speculations. There are plenty of people on this board who have modified engines mated to the ZF (such as I), and all is fine and has been fine for many, many miles. There are also those who have stock engines mated to the ZF, and the tranny "gave up the ghost" far less than 100K miles (which is the "supposed" life of these tranny's). Granted, an auto is not as robust as a stick, but there are far many more Saab stick's with problems than there are Saab auto's as is evidenced here on this board.
For now, I feel performing this trick should be done on a limited basis, and should be done with some common sense. Definitely slow up on the speed when the car needs to shift. Definitely do not allow the kick-down feature to occur since this is way too high of an rpm when this much amount of boost is being applied. And always change the ATF every 15K miles!
