Ever read about what it was like working in factories before workers organized themselves in unions? - it wasn't a pretty sight! GM used to employ as many people in the US as it now does worldwide - that surely doesn't put your "the unions are intimidating GM" theory on very firm footing. And stupid statements, such as "...ridiculous bennies to retired workers who made a career out of doing mediocre work." does nothing but slander many who have worked at GM and may have been very creative and productive. Rather than pontificating and attacking workers who you've probably never met, nor witnessed at their jobs, you should look look elsewhere for the crisis that plagues all automakers, not just GM. It's called overcapacity and overproduction, and it's something that's not caused by workers, nor unions. If the unions were as strong and intimidating, as you suggest, then GM would still be providng jobs in this country. I think you're confounding things with this intimidation 'theory'.
