I know... that's the exact opposite of what GM is now. But they have been losing market share for so long, it is time to do something radical.
If I were Wagonner or Lutz, I'd do this:
- fold up Pontiac. It really has no unique products. Just warmed over designs from somewhere else.
- fold up Buick. Push its models into a lower cost Cadillac (the value leader) and a higher cost Chevy (the plush Chevy).
- fold up Saab. I know, heresy. But it has been unable to compete against BMW or Mercedes, or, for that matter with Acura or Infiniti.
- fold GMC into a new division called Chevy Truck. GMC and Chevy dealers would sell the exact same trucks from this division. No re-badging.
- extend Chevy to include a "sporty" model like the G6. Offer everything from econo-boxes to the plush Buick-like models. Aveo, Cobalt, Malibu, G6, LaCrosse.
- sell Opels through Saturn dealers. Put the ION's dash in front of the driver. Perhaps take the 9-3 and make it the next mid-size Saturn?
The end result would be:
Chevy - a full line of passenger cars and trucks. From econo-boxes to plush cruisers. The bread and butter, volume lines.
Saturn - cars with a european feel and sensibility with an emphasis on safety. You'll be able to actually find a car with a manual transmission here.
Chevy Truck - full line of trucks, from pickups to Suburbans
Cadillac - similar to today, but with a lower cost line to compete with Infiniti/Lexus/Acura.
