Anti-unionism and the corporate state...

From a former non-union Honda worker:
"I worked at Honda in Ohio, where the Acura rolls down the same assembly
line as the Civic. My job was to whack at the Acura bodies with a big
hammer in order to try to get the panels to fit together well enough so the
hand welders could get them out the door (the robots couldn't weld many of
them because of poor fit--misshapen panels and robot fault)..... Oh well, gotta keep the line moving and get those cars out the door. We tried to patch things together as much as possible but management constantly pushed for production numbers. Their motto was safety, quality, production but the joke was to invert the order, which was the reality. I eventually left
Honda/Acura after being hit by a car, which violently lurched on the line,
striking me in the side and dislodging my back....
"....I encourage all car drivers to work in an auto factory for a while. Honda uses temp agencies which pay $7/hr. so it's easy to get a job there. In fact, they can't get enough people. It's good exercise too--most people
lose twenty pounds in the first few weeks."
But, you say, who needs unions when the law protects workers? - ya right, the law can't even provide a decent minimum wage! Our view of the world is completely reversed: where you see the law as protection from corrupt unions, I see the unions as protection from a corrupt legal/political structure. The state, in its' present form, is greedily aligned to corporate interests rather than workers' interests. Those who want workers interests tied to the state aren't coming up with anything new - those were the demands, along with making strikes illegal, made in Germany and Italy in the 30's, too! You may feel that auto manufacturing doesn't need unions, but auto manufacturing workers definitely need them.
