"Ever read about what it was like working in factories before workers organized themselves in unions?"
Wasn't this shortly after the Industrial Revolution? Unions made a lot of sense back then. And they still do, for some things, such as oversight of working conditions.
I think the point Noel is making is that unions keep asking for more and more, each year wanting a dramatic increase in pay, benefits, etc. I don't know any of the workers there, but it's a general principle that individuals who know they are not evaluated on merit will, at some point, stop caring about quality. If this continues long enough, like it has at GM, it creates a CULTURE of sub-par work, where mediocrity is the norm.
Yes, I'm sure there are exceptions to the generalization, but we're talking about the trend in a big company.
"GM used to employ as many people in the US as it now does worldwide" What does this tell you? To me, I look for the reason that GM now has more employees worldwide than in the US. As the saying goes, follow the money. Again, I don't know the details, but I would bet the ranch (if I had one) that it is cheaper to build cars overseas than it is in the US. Why is that? I don't believe it to be a plausible argument that the unions are not partially responsible for this situation. High labor costs in the US would cause ANY company to seek to find labor somewhere else. However, GM management also needs to be held responsible, and also in there somewhere is probably the US and state governments.

If you really want to see an union that intimidates, looking at the public school teacher's union in PA. For a job that is only NINE MONTHS A YEAR, starting wages are much higher than other fields. And don't tell me that I'm comparing apples to oranges, or "they provide necessary services." I'm in Human Services as well (MR adults), and my salary can't even touch a teacher who has the same number of years in as I do.

Have a great Easter.
