Crazy mortgages, postage stamp lot sizes, and smaller houses.
I went for 1800 sq ft in Cleveland with a 2 1/2 car garge to a 1050 sq ft condo with a carport. You have to either make a pile of dough, or compromise. We also have lenders out here who do creative things. PMI is less common out here so you can stretch your dollar further. They do a lot of 80/10/10 loans (primary/second/down payment). It hurt like hell to get into the market, but now that I see how much my condo went up over 2 years, I'm loving it!
If you want 1.5 acres, prepare to shell out well over 1M in the bay area. Maybe over 2M. That's a chunk of land for out here! Under 500 will get you a condo, but probably not in SF proper. I don't know about LA or San Diego, but they can't be far behind.
As for gas, it's just something you get used to. If the price of bread suddenly doubled, would you quit buying it at the store? Gas is still cheaper than Canada, Europe, and most of the rest of the world.
People do have to pinch pennies here. Fewer vacations, I'd imagine. But if you look around, I'm convinced I'm the only person who is not a millionaire. Perhaps a lot of people are using home equity loans. Look at all the nice cars on the road, the nice shopping, etc. I don't know how some people do it.
Some call the cost of living here the "sunshine tax". I was just back in the midwest on business... Other than the changing leaves, the weather there is depressing. There's big value to sunshine and laid back life.
