I grew up in rural NorCal, and I must say that I loved it. Where else gets 500 inches of snow a year (45 minutes up the hill from where I grew up...that means skiing until memorial day every year), 300+ days of sunshine (that means potential mountain biking year-round), is within 2.5 hours of the culture/entertainment options of S.F. is within reasonable distance of 5 national parks, has some of the best fruit in the world (What can I say, that's one thing I miss when I'm away from CA), and has similar ranges in climate to those throughout the whole continental US?
I realize your question is posed to the SF Bay/LA dwellers, but there's a lot more to CA than where you've visited. I often wonder the same thing myself, when I visit my extended families in the Bay Area. As far as metropolitan areas go, though, very few that I've visited are as beautiful as the Bay Area, what with the water, the hills, the weather, etc.
Anyway, I'm enjoying Bozeman, MT these days as a graduate student, but I'll move back to a small town in CA when I'm done so I can be close to family. I'll have to pay more for a house, but I hope to be in a position to do that without too much trouble.
Cheers,
Peter
