I lived in San Diego (Rancho Bernardo, actually) after college. My wife and I are both aircraft design engineers, so our salaries are pretty good. Not lawyer or doctor good, but in the $100K's combined. We found San Diego just too expensive to live in back in '01 and decided to move to Wichita, Kansas. We're both from the midwest, so the culture difference wasn't an issue. But when we moved, we made exactly the same, if not more $ here than we did in San Diego. I guaruntee those dollars go a lot farther in Kansas than California. We now go on nice vacations and have a good house (brand new, ~3600 sq ft) for almost the same as we were paying in apartment rent in San Diego.
We had planned to be "equity immigrants", i.e. buy a house in SD, live there a few years, and use the equity to get a nice place back in the midwest. The problem was there were no decent properties available for under $300K - we saw a couple of double wide trailers for over $200K, and that's 30 miles north and 15 miles inland from the city.
I still don't know how people who move to California can make it with real estate the way it is. I guess it's a choice you have to make. For now, I'll be happy to vacation in California (or Hawaii, or Germany, or France, or wherever) and live in Kansas. We've got 4 real seasons, plenty of sunshine, and lots of friendly people :)
