Lived in Monterey during the 90's and was utterly and completely priced out of the housing market. We loved living there and go back every chance we get. From friends we know, it is possible to buy real estate wisely and have a great life there without being wealthy. It just didn't work out for us at that time and in that place.
For our chosen field (my wife and I are journalists), we can't make enough money in California to afford a house. We live in NYC and own a small apartment in Manhattan, but we work for the top news media companies in the nation. Our options are much more limited in California, but for those in fields like law or computers, there are plenty of jobs.
The trick to having a good lifestyle in California, from my experience, is keeping your commute to a reasonable length. Yes, commutes in New York are longer, but they're usually on public transport rather than a stressful hourlong drive on the LA or Bay area freeways.
