I guess it is all relative. Since I am a native San Franciscan, I never really felt the price of homes until I went one my first business trip to the Southern States. Yes, cost of living is higher here but so are the wages. Traffic is bad but I have seen worse in other parts of the country and world. My wife and I are fortunate that we purchased our first home in 1988 then upgraded in 1992 to our current home. Yes, it is worth over a million dollars but the equity gained more than offset any possible increase in mortgage to the next upgraded home in my area. Used the equity in the current home to purchase another home nearby. I guess that is how I been able to survive the rising prices in homes in the San Francisco area. Once you struggle to purchase your first home, the second, third, etc. becomes much easier. Having a successful consulting business with many tax writeoffs also helps.
