and while I LOVE the weather can't stand the congestion and traffic. Or the housing prices! But I can see why people love it there. I wouldn't mind living in the San Diego area or north of SF Bay either.
Housing is kinda relative--and what you are used to. My 2600 sq.ft. house in NH is on an acre and has doubled in value in 10 years. But is still only worth about $350K. But in CA the equivalent place would be $1-2 million in many places, and would be just as much in parts of CT or even in some towns closer to Boston. I like having some space around my house--I can only see three neighbors from my yard.
The variety of environments to play in in CA makes it great, as does having climate instead of weather.
