If a set of tires are not X'ed at least once in their life, you end up with one or both left side tires with less wear than the right side. Usually, I 'X' the left tire with the most tread with the right with the least tread towards the end of there their life, when the difference in tread depth is most noticeable. Have run directional tires the 'wrong way' with little noticeable affect. Years ago Michelin tires did not seem to like changing their rotation. The sholder tread would step and make noise, no durability or handling problems occurred.
When U.S. made radial tires first appeared, they were rather fragile (especially the glass belted ones), reversing the rotation and rough roads would do them in.
