Preferred tire rotation pattern?

I used to rotate tires back to front, keeping them on the same left/right side. Now I see that FWD rotation is to switch the left rear to right front and right rear to left front and moving the front tires to the back on the same side.
I thought that radial tires, when first made in the 1960's were not supposed to turn backwards for fear of tread separation (so right front to right rear and left front to left rear). Is this no longer true?
Question 2: My front outer tires have slightly more wear, probably from aggressive driving. Or should I reduce the toe in or change the camber? The difference is only 0.5/32" over 4,000 mi,
