I want tires with more tread on the front of a FWD car to give traction in snow and avoid hydroplaning in the rain, especially in the highway.
I'd rather have the rear try to come around on me than have the car understeer off the road and into something solid. I have been putting the tires with the most tread on the front since my first FWD car in 1978 and had no issues at all in any weather.
I run 4 snows in winter with a F/R rotation at each changeover. I'm not convinced that if the tires are reasonably evenly worn--which they are with routine rotations--there is any significant difference in traction by having toothier tires on the back.
FWIW, I've heard some idiot tire salesman tell a customer who only wanted 2 snow tires to put them on the back of a FWD car, telling the customer it was safer.
