which are pretty rare if you are taking care of your tires. When was the last time anyone here had a blowout? And doesn't anyone learn to control a skid anymore?
The sales guy I referred to in my previous post happened to be at Sears. The older couple he was talking to wanted snows but could only afford or only wanted to buy two tires. So he said put the snows on the back of their FWD car. IMHO he was saying what he was told to, but the flip side is that if they can't go anywhere because they don't have traction then they can't get in an accident. I guess that makes it safe!
I see a lot of FWD cars slide straight off a road in the winter in classic FWD understeer skids. It's a nice way to go off the road because you can see the tree you're going to hit.
I hear the presumed logic of better traction to the rear, but 30+ years of FWD cars in snow, rain and dirt convinces me it is a lot of hooey, assuming the tires are relatively evenly worn, as they are if you rotate regularly.
As for hydroplaning, losing steering because your fronts are off the ground is no fun at all. And rear hydroplaning is a LOT less common unless one is driving waaaay too fast for conditions. Put the tires with tread on the front and drive reasonably.
This, like oil discussions, can go on forever, but I'll keep the toothier tires up front.
