So this California Highway Patrol officer, off duty, is driving a loaner Lexus. The throttle jams (someone in the car actually has time to call 911) and finally unable to control the speeding car, it flies off the end of the road at 120mph into the air and crashes bursting into flames killing everyone.
The latest theory is that the all weather floor mat may have jammed the accelerator. What I'm wondering is why an experienced professional driver couldn't control a car with a stuck throttle?
One disturbing reason is that the car was keyless, so there wasn't a key to turn off. Apparently you have to hold the start button down for 3 seconds ot shut the car off, a detail likely unexplained in a loaner car. It never occurred to me before that this could be a big downside to keyless cars, the inability to turn them off. Motorcycles still have prominent kill switches in addition to ignition switches. Maybe keyless cars need a separate easily accessible kill switch too.
The second disturbing thing is that it seems the brakes were on HARD for quite awhile and still unable to control the runaway car. Why in heavens name didn't he downshift or for that matter jam it into park?
We have CHP's in here all the time as they ride BMW motorcycles in California so I'll have to start asking about the circumstances of the crash. I betcha' there's some good inside info.
