I can't think of any reason that an automatic transmission would have to wait to shift into neutral, whether at highway speeds or otherwise. The other way around, I can see - if you're coasting in neutral and suddenly put it back into drive - but even then, the fluid coupling of the torque converter means it's not going to cause as much of a shock load as it would if you did it on a manual without rev-matching, and being electronically-controlled means it should select the proper gear for your speed.
I once popped my 9-3 into neutral on the highway by mistake - I'd had it in 3rd for engine-braking, and slammed it back to D hard enough that the shifter ended up in neutral. In these cars, you can always shove the shifter into neutral without squeezing the release button, and the same is true when you're going from neutral to drive and from low gears back to drive. I was a little uncomfortable putting it back in gear at 60mph, not knowing if it would end up in 1st, so I pulled over jut to be safe.
Later I remembered that a buddy in college used to always put his car in neutral to see if he could coast down this one hill and make it through the intersection at the bottom before putting it back in gear. I imagine today's transmissions are designed to prevent them from destroying themselves under all but the harshest abuse!
