But I also have a hard time understanding how this could happen. Standing on the brakes should have been able to stop the car even at WOT. Like the others mentioned - neutral seems obvious. Finally the 3 seconds to shut off thing sounds crazy.

Bottom line: seems the tragedy was caused by a combination of bad car design and panic...
