Various manufacturers have "black box" technology that "remembers" key factors about a car's acceleration or speed (or braking force?) before a crash. Don't know what Lexus uses in that regard, and the nature of the crash/fire might have wiped out the ability to retrieve anything.
I'm an Audi guy, dating back to the 80s and the unintended acceleration fiasco. What I remember from that is the knowledge that the brakes can always bring a car to a stop, overcoming the 110 or 162 horsepower of those cars when they were supposedly out of control. But, with HP approaching 400 these days, maybe things have changed.
There's a lot we don't know, and I'm not going to offer speculations. I will just say, however, that it makes one wonder about the wisdom of cars without traditional ignition switches, traditional gear shift levers (gone on many BMWs and Mercedes), and even parking brake levers or foot pedals. In an emergency, I wouldn't know what to push, pull, turn or step on beyond the brake, accelerator and steering wheel if I were in a new Mercedes. In normal conditions those latter three would be enough, but when an unusual emergency arises, I can see how real confusion could develop.
