Yes, delayed downshifts used to be designed in....... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] In Reply to: Re: Very sad, oldsaab, Fri, 11 Sep 2009 14:51:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Even back when automatic tranmisisons relied entirely upon hydraulic line pressures for control, they were "programmed" to not downshift at high speeds in response to driver gear selector inputs until the RPM's dropped to safe levels.
Slamming a gear selector from Drive to Low at highway speed would result in the tranny dropping one gear only. The shift to Low was delayed by the centrifugal governer until RPM's decreased to point where the tranny would not be destroyed by down shifting.
I have no memory of what shifting into Neutral at high speed would do. Would the tranny respond or not?
In today's age of electronics and software control, it is possible the transmission would ignore any command to shift into Neutral at speed.
But on a Saab note; will the new 9-5 also have a three second delay for turn off? Is this common with other brands using start buttons rather than ignition switches?
