The US automakers arrogantly refused to accept the work of Dr. Deming in the 1950's regarding constantly improving quality daily and reaping long term rewards. Instead they focused on reducing costs and short term profits. (Let's ignore their refusal to use marketing to figure out what people wanted, and building what they wanted instead... that's another issue). The Japanese took Dr. Deming very seriously, to the point that the Deming award is an annual prize of great honor in Japan.
The end result was very predictable. The Japanese reaped the benefits of long term quality improvements. The Big Three had a well deserved reputation for crap quality. THe only exception was Ford, which finally saw the light (rememeber when they adopted the slogan 'quality is job 1'). Ford got religion rather late and the entrenched interests made it hard to change, but they've worked at it.
Some of that was seen in the last couple years. Fors hasn't needed a bailout (although they took a huge loan for modernization). But, they still seem to be doing better overall.
