Here's a prime example of a roll reversal. Go look at a new Toyota Tundra and then go look at a new Dodge Ram. The differences are amazing, and not in the way you would think. The Tundra is embarrassing - I'm shocked that Toyota would put out a product that is so horribly cheap both in materials used and build quality. The Dodge on the other hand is very, very impressive. Quality materials, and decent fit and finish. I was shocked.
And don't think that I'm some huge Dodge (or any other American car manufacturer) fan and that I hate Toyota (or any other Japanese manufactures). To this day I swear the best car I ever owned has been my 1996 Toyota Corolla but in the past ten years Toyota has really dropped the ball. We were shopping for a new car for my wife about two years ago and looked at the Camry. I was shocked at how poor that car was built; the interior was a joke.
Seriously, if anyone thinks that Toyota still has "it", they obviously haven't stepped into a showroom in years. The only decent product on the Toyota lots anymore is the Land Cruiser - the fit and finish of that is still very impressive. I've predicted that Toyota is going to run into the same issues that GM has has in the past several years by trying to be the biggest. Too much cost cutting and a lack of focus is going to (and even Toyota executives have already admitted this) bite them in the end.
