I'll certainly agree that the Ram will probably not have the same reliability as the Tundra but I can assure you that in the five years of ownership that the typical owner will drive the car, the Tundra will have far more squeaks and rattles than the comparable Ram. Seriously, go look at the Tundra; this is not your typical Toyota. Materials may not be a Toyota strong suit but fit and finish used to be. The Tundra is lacking in both these attributes and the cost cutting is painfully obvious. Everything you touch give you the impression that this truck was not built to last. Yes, it will probably be reliable, but it's far from durable - something I thing a truck owner wants in a truck. The previous generation Tundra was not bad at all. The current one is something I would expect GM to put out.

If you want to see a prime example, compare the Land Cruiser to the Sequoia. These two vehicles look as though they were built by two different companies. Everything in the Land Cruiser screams reliability _and_ durability but there none of that in a comparable Sequoia (the Platinum edition is about $10k less than the Land Cruiser). I would expect the LC to last an owner more than 20 years, the Sequoia maybe five.

I agree that Toyota has never been the most cutting edge in terms of innovation or style and I agree that the reputation has always been that of reliability. I just feel that in their attempts to be the biggest, they have let a lot slide. The most recent Camry and Tundra have suffered from initial reliability problems; once you let the one thing your company is known for slide, what else can you fall back on? GM has learned this the hard way and we'll see if Toyota suffers the same fate. One thing I'll give Toyota credit for is acknowledging the problems very proactively and very publicly, something an American company never seems to do.
