US quality is way up and the cars themselves are now pretty decent (save for the Mercury Grand Marquis I floated... I mean..., er, rented, recently).

The weak link is still at the point of sale where you have to endure the stressful dealer's sales and finance department gauntlet. Oh, and the lousy 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranties. Of course, all of that applies to the Japanese brands too. Make the buying process such that the customer doesn't feel fleeced upon exit would be one way to differentiate US makes from other brands.
