In the late 70s I was involved with an team assigned to investigate outsourcing of printer mfg to Japan. We sent all the info out regards the requirments including quality targets - uping the ante from what we had been experiencing. When we met with Japanese representatives and reached the quality discussion - they had amused and pleased looks on their faces as they confidently stated that our quality goal could be easily met and exceeded within a short time - it wasn't even up to their standards.

Since the mid seventies my cars have been either Saabs or Japanese cars, with the noteable exception of a 1991 Taurus SHO - engine I believe was assembled in Japn with Ford supply the block. Engine was OK but the rest of the car was riddled with mfg and quality defects - but at that time Ford was heavily advertiszing quality is job one and the car had a sticker built with pride in atlanta - the car had a 12 month warranty but the quality sucked as did Taurus' overall . I swore I'd never buy another Ford or American car. I actually was able to get the EPA to force Ford to fix my defective AC system as dealer never fixed it but it was the old freon system and technically violated bans on freon emissions.
Ultimately the fault was found to be two of the 4 screws attaching the hi pressure pipe to the compressor had been crossed threaded, allowing continual leakage. Ford wanted nothing to do with fixing it.

So that's why I posted asking the question if their products were really better than their American counterparts or are is it owing to GM and Chryslers bankruptcy.

I've never met a Camry owner who was unhappy with their car as they all say they go well over 100k without any issues. And the Japanese cars I've bought new - only one had to be returned for a single warranty repair. With my Saabs - only one was brought new but others were bought with low mileage but all had multiple warranty repairs, some of which was pretty costly. the 2004 ARC was the worse 11 trips to the dealer, 3 on a flatbed. Who has the patience to deal with that type of inconvenience - I no longer do.
