I agree, all vehicles keep getting bigger and it has a direct impact on the potential mpg of the vehicle. There is no getting around how aerodynamics affect freeway mpg and weight influences city mpg. The new 9-5 is large and I much prefer the size of my older (2004) 9-5 - big enough to seat 4 passengers comfortably, good mpg and performance, easy to park, etc. It's a perfect size car. I think gas needs to cost more before some of these giant F250's and Suburbans with single occupants begin to get parked again. And it is undoubtedly going higher.
