good point, especially if they use bitumous material for sound deadening... mass, air tightness, isolation are the 3 key elements of sound proofing something... everyone wants quiet cars these days (not a high priority for me, but whatever)...
wrt mpg, I think it is a matter of ratios... I figure something that gets over 30mpg (eg 9-5) on the highway, particularly at real life speeds, is great as it saves $ on long trips + means I stop less often. Around town, I don't worry too much (hell, like many here, I'm using premium fuel anyway, so cost is not my #1 concern). Like you say, we keep the commute short, walk + bike a lot, so it's no big deal... the % saved going from 30mpg to 40mpg is smaller + the impact in terms of the type of vehicle is significant at the moment. I think when better hybrids come available we'll start seeing another significant % improvement in mpg for the safe cars with good utility. I am excited to see what Saab does with the new 9-3!
