Well most people wouldn't celebrate as good luck increasing desertification and soil erosion in the mid-latitudes, net LOSS of arable cropland, diminishing fresh water supplies due to loss of snowpack, species loss, increased disease vectors and more intense storms such as the Cat 5 typhoon that hit Australia yesterday. All of which are the consequence of a warming climate and occuring right now.

However I agree with you on your first point - that driving less makes the biggest difference, without doubt. That said, I'm not in the position to make a move or change jobs at the moment so will continue to optimize my mpg as best I can : )
