When you get to the price point of a car, there are a lot of other factors that come into play, and a lot of them are emotional... and brand image is one of them. Certain cars/brands get a premium because of it... they are essentially a fashion accessory.
Heck, how many people wouldn't be caught dead driving a station wagon but they want the function of one, so they buy an SUV instead... even though chances are the ride, handling, fuel economy, etc are all worse.
We all probably know people that can "afford" a Mercedes but drive a Lincoln, and those who can only "afford" a Lincoln but drive a Mercedes.
So is a Mercedes really worth a big premium over a Lincoln? It depends on what one values.
