They reached a point where there didn't really offer much of anything more than the cheaper versions by other divisions. That was about the time Lexus showed up which is another story. Certainly the top of the line M's and AMG's are technological wonders but that could be a minus too. They've gotten so ultra complicated no one wants them used. I can remember when I was in the car business and seeing V12 MB's and BMW's go through the auction with no one bidding on them. On the "Car Show" they had a segment where people had them figure prices for their cars. Some guy had a 4 year old Porsche Cayenne he paid $140,000 for--it was worth $34,000. How many times are people going to take that kind of a whacking? Even if you can afford to loose that much there's got to be a point where you start feeling like a chump. Again there are a lot more choices and alternatives now. A Boss 302 Mustang would be pretty tempting next to an M3 since it's a LOT less. And because it's relatively simple mechanically, there'd be pretty strong demand for a used one. It's just a seat of the pants thing but it seems like you just don't see as many new M3's as you used to a few years ago. I'd be curious to know the numbers. I think there are still some subtle differences in European cars that make them worthwhile (at least for me), but you have to wonder how long that will be enough.
