Excellent points. I remember seeing a new Citroen SM at a dealership in the Chicago suburbs back in 1974, and being overwhelmed with how unique it was compared to any other car on the road. Of course, if we had been able to afford it, we probably would have been overwhelmed with how expensive it was to maintain. We had a VW Vanagon Syncro and a Mercedes Benz 300D that had nothing in common with any domestic vehicle, and we thoroughly enjoyed both of them though they, too, were more costly to service than more conventional cars. I still remember the satisfying sound from shutting a door on that old Benz, which had over 200,000 miles on it when we sold it. Built like a tank, for sure. The current MB sedan lineup does nothing for me except remind me of how much they look like Hyundais.
There are still a few "foreign" cars that are fairly unique, Porsche being one, but almost all the car makers are making "global" cars these days that are, sadly, hard to tell apart.
