Yeah, the issue with the great lakes is that it takes a big windstorm across the whole lake to make waves big enough to surf at all... so the winter has more wind, so better waves... until things freeze. I tried Lake Ontario once. The waves were easily head high, but the period was too short - there was no power in them and really choppy... there is also less bouyancy with no salt... I could tell the first time I duck dived one... it was way too easy, and there was just not enough oomph in them for it to be fun enough for the 3 hour drive. I think if one lived right by the lake so one could time it exactly, they'd be fine on a longboard. Would also be awesome fun for kite surfers (or kite skiers in the winter!)...
Damn you Mike... I just checked the marine info for back home... 3-5m right now (9'-15')... that's overhead for sure... sigh... hope you get some nice waves over the holidays!
