From your own article, it stated that he has significantly funded the businesses with his own capital also.

For amusement, I've provided a link to the perspective of your neighbours to the north! We've spent billions of $$ subsidizing automotive manufacturers that for the most part are not even doing anything innovative. All of this just to compete with other countries to keep production here. Note that we have an order of magnitude difference in population funding these subsidies, so the amounts are quite substantial.

I will leave the discussion of whether or not subsidies are appropriate off this bb (we probably mostly agree, but the topic is not one for the bb), but it hardly seems unreasonable that a tech based automotive startup would not take advantage of the same kinds of opportunities. Would be foolhardy not to! Business is ruthless!

On a side note, the blog posting that Scott put up is 10 years old! They seem to have followed their "secret master plan" fairly well. Still hoping U2BC chimes in here re his roadster (that he bought used btw, so may be able to address some with the "used not new" buyer standpoint).

Other automotive subsidies...
