Southern Califormia is somewhat unique due to lots of sunshine, little rain, and high electrical rates. From talking to California transplants working here in Michigan, it seems that nearly every home there has solar panels installed because of the convergence of these three factors.

The rest of the country is trailing far behind SoCal with distributed solar generation. The growth of distributed solar power generation is one area where Elon Musk's battery plans make tremendous sense. Generate during the day on your roof, store in your personal battery pack for night time and cloudy day use, and sell the surplus back to the grid.
