I'm assuming they meant the life of a typical car--very few people keep cars for 30 years. And they said that if the batteries do fail you can continue to drive it in gasoline mode. So yes, they don't last forever but I suppose you could get batteries from a wrecked one at some point if you want to be a "settler" about it. I was impressed with the condition of the car at that point and feel this is sufficiently well proven, long lasting technology.
