It'll be used in the middle of nowhere, so it does need to be self-contained... generator, etc. I had not thought about the sleeping at an angle - I was thinking walking at an angle, which wouldn't bug me. I can definitely see how sleeping on an incline would completely suck! :)
I had originally been looking at Class As, but started to think about Class Cs for the convenience of size, seating, and maintenance costs (tires, etc.). Good to hear about the pluses on the As.
Of the As I've looked at, the Holiday Ramblers do seem to have the best build quality, so thanks for calling that out. Tiffin Allegros also seem to be fairly nicely made.
FWIW, this search originally was for a truly vintage rig - like a Revcon - but I got scared away form them by people warning about reliability and possibly repair problems. That said, there are a couple really nice early machines right now that are *really* attractive. I think the advice to stay away is solid, but OTOH, mechanically speaking there doesn't seem to be much separating '70s machines from '80s machines mechanically in Class A land - they are are carbureted big blocks connected to 3-speeds automatics. Knowing what I know about Dodge, Ford, and GM's commercial stuff, I can't quite pinpoint what's given up going older except maybe cosmetic stuff?
Anyway... on that subject, I don't think diesel is an option. Diesel motors from the Big 3 weren't great until the '90s - at least not great enough I'd look forward to lumbering 15000lbs around in the foothills. ;) I am probably looking specifically as gas engines - 440s, 460s, and 454s.
