I have a pretty substantial checklist, but my big concern is my ability to properly evaluate what I am looking, and, to some degree, getting a real sense of whether I can check certain items off. It's easy to verify the generator starts, but it's tough to evaluate whether it's been maintained and will last another several hundred hours. I can look to be sure the shower works and has pressure, but I can't evaluate the condition of the holding tanks. I'm reasonable with mechanical things and thorough when buying used contraptions, but that still leaves a lot of room for problems.
So far all the people I've talked to have been private party save one, but none of them have been terribly helpful. Tough to say for sure, but I think most of them are genuinely ignorant of what they've got rather than just being evasive. Really, it's been no different than buying a used car. I'd love to hook up with an enthusiast, but in the class of vehicle I'm shopping I don't think that's going to happen. Unfortunately, around here, a dealer really isn't an option - nobody within 300 miles sells $10k RVs, everyone is focusing on near-new ones. I get it, there's no money in 20 year old RVs just like there's no money in 20 year old cars. I did an extensive amount looking at stores before ending up on CL.
The videos I watched of aalespeople on youtube was helpful, as I got a sense of what to expect inside, so at least I won't look like a total noob when I go in there. I also read the owners manual for the Bounder, which was more insight.
I'm going to look at that Bounder in a couple hours so I'll take some pictures and come back with any questions. I really appreciate the offer of help. I'm not in a hurry to do this - I'd like to have it done by June but that's still two months off. If the Bounder doesn't work out that's no big deal, it will at least be a learning experience. However, I hope it is ok as I'd like to have some time with the truck in the driveway to iron out details and in broad terms (equipment, configuration, size) today's Bounder is bloody near perfect. TBI, OD, 90 gallons of water, 28'. It has 100k on it which is high, but not crazy-high. It does not have a leveling system, but I don't anticipate that being a real problem for my intended use.
We'll see - and I'll report back!
