Tires seem to be a common theme, and it's why I started leaning away from an A and towards a C. The price difference for light truck tires (even a high load range) versus commercial chassis tires is STUNNING. Really makes you look twice at the prices of these things, as old truck with brand new tires seems to be an almost surefire money saver versus new truck with old tires.

I am really hoping to find a truck with recent, good tires. They don't seem to figure heavily into resale value, and I don't want to buy $2000+ worth of tires and lose it all when it comes time to sell. Obviously used buyers are at the mercy of the market, but that seems no bueno. :)

Your MPG estimate is interesting, as I've read the GM 454s will do 8-12, depending on load and carbs vs EFI. If an injected 460 can't beat 8mpg, that's a real reason to look at GM!

On the subject, I guess most of these trucks also got 4-speed autos when they went to fuel injection, and that seems attractive, but I'm not sure about durability and maintenance. The C6 and TH400 were pretty durable transmissions, and cheap to fix. Going EOD or 700R4 is scary - though maybe the GM trucks ended up with a 4L80? I dunno. Good things to keep in mind, though.

What I find weird is how common ChryCo parts were in the beginning of the RV craze, but how everyone shifted to GM & Ford by the '80s. I guess part of the ChryCo government deal/ That's the only thing I can think of.
